Very interesting data! Definitely larger studies are needed. In the meantime, here is something to ponder: The authors categorized disease by the estimated degree of luminal narrowing. How would plaque composition impact the findings? Can carotid plaque be a marker of the presence of coronary vulnerable plaque (rather than critical stenosis) and therefore a predictor of MI?

Interesting CTA study! It shows a lack of correlation in the degree of disease severity among various vascular beds in patients with stroke. The process of atherosclerosis may differ among vessels and this paper contributes to our understanding of the disease. It seems that rules and “common” paradigms do not apply to many individuals and we need better “prediction tools” and perhaps even change our thinking mode toward “individualized medicine”.
