Embryology and Developmental Defects of the Interatrial Septum

OBJECTIVES: The various types of atrial septal defects (ASDs) can be differentiated on the basis of their imaging appearance on MDCT.

CONCLUSIONS: It is fundamental for the cardiac imager to understand the embryologic development of the interatrial septum and the morphogenic differences of ASDs.

  1. Short review of the development of the IAS. The diagrams on the development of the septum are great. The images shown in this pictorial are exclusively from CT exams which highlights the importance of reviewing the cardiac structures in their entirety.
