Adult Cardiac Valvular Disease for the General Radiologist: Resident and Fellow Education Feature

Cardiac valve dysfunction underlies a large fraction of cases of cardiac disease. Many patients with heart failure or valve dysfunction present with nonspecific symptoms (eg, shortness of breath) and are evaluated with chest radiography or chest computed tomography (CT). In addition, patients with other diseases (eg, cancer) may undergo chest imaging for disease staging or preoperative planning, and incidental findings of cardiac disease may be important for proper care of these patients. Familiarity with the radiographic and CT features of valve dysfunction is essential for accurate and expeditious diagnosis and treatment.
